Abstract

This study aims to address the strategic challenge faced by small and medium-sized cities in leveraging social media to enhance their market competitiveness. Moving beyond the predominant focus on metropolitan areas, this research examines how multi-platform social media environments shape audience perceptions and influence destination positioning. Grounded in media communication and perception difference theories, a comprehensive framework was developed to evaluate cognitive, affective, conative, communication, and tourism intention dimensions. Using Chizhou, China as the case site, data were collected through a structured questionnaire survey, yielding 182 valid responses. The empirical results reveal a critical managerial insight. While audience segments exhibit high consistency in emotional resonance, significant cognitive gaps persist based on geographic origin and occupation. This divergence suggests that managers must move away from homogeneous broadcasting and adopt a differentiated targeting strategy. By aligning communication tactics with specific consumer groups, destinations can optimize resource allocation and enhance marketing efficiency. These findings extend the discourse on destination management by providing an evidence-based roadmap for cities with limited promotion budgets to achieve precise market positioning in the digital era.
